Staff wanted me to call police. I said I am not having any part in criminalising an acutely psychotic patient getting inadequate care 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think most incidences of violence on wards that I have seen, they have a long enough trajectory that staff could intervene before restraint is ‘necessary’.

I have been this patient. Staff mostly didn’t bother restraining the other patient (I have pictures of my injuries), and actually when they did it didn’t make me feel any better but I am weird like that.

I mean I don’t see them massively wasting time worrying about the legality of many things.

I mean it is assault if not done according to guidelines. That trust where loads of staff have got done for ‘non approved techniques of moving people’ do not know why this isn’t being recognised as assault.

Even if it was not legal, staff who did it would have a more powerful/believable testimony than patients because power and legitimacy.

That could work. Think of all the justifications people use for restraint. If it was illegal staff could use defence of self defence, like in any other assault, but the start point would be this is so not ok it is not legal.

That is my non researched observation. I think a small amount of experienced therapists continue to do good work but there is probably massive percentage who just plateau with a hint of cynicism.

In my old life as a therapist I often saw what looked to me to be better work from trainees on account of being actively learning, having to reflect on work in multiple places, being very committed, not feeling like they had the answer but actively trying to find it etc
