Our country is messed up. 2 chaps who are directors at the RBZ are also directors of ... ZAMCO! Their job at RBZ is to supervise banks & financial markets. But they are also at ZAMCO whose job is to take over banks’ bad loans. Wouldn’t it be great to see ZAMCO’s asset book?

The stealing that goes on in The elite circles of Zimbabwe is on a massive scale. Most of the high end goods and properties are purchased on a cash basis. That doesn’t happen at such a scale even in developed economies. It’s a fantastically abnormal & distorted economy.

But that is precisely why we have the mess. Short-sightedness. Look at how normal humans were happy with debt forgiveness in 2013, an electioneering gimmick. The same normal people complain when their city can’t deliver basic public services. You get what you pay for.

I don’t think the question should be about “happiness”. We might all want to be “happy” not to pay tax, tichidhla zvedu tigere, but that would be foolish. Someone has to pay tax & that means we must all do our bit. Winning/losing shouldn’t be on account of presidential decrees.

Actually, taking the impact of the judgment tonits logical conclusion, anyone whose debts were denominated in USD before 22 February 2019 is entitled to a review. If the bank unilaterally converted the debt at any rate above 1:1, the affected client can seek a review.

If you are a member of the elite with multiple bank debts, it’s not surprising that the outcome presents “mixed feelings”. Proper economic decisions should not be based on “depending on which side you sit”.

BSR: The Great ZAMCO scam? I was doing a short thread on something that occurred to me as I thought about the implications of the Supreme Court’s currency judgment. It grew too long so I converted it (fairly!) into a short article. I hope they clarify.

1| packs a hard & knockout punch in his BSR on the court-sanctioned USD/Bond grand heist- "It is hard to make sense of this reasoning when one considers what has happened to the RTGS dollar since SI 33.2019 was issued in Feb 2019...."

Finance Minister won’t answer this and similar questions from savers who have suffered a great robbery on account of his currency policy. The only hope is that international broadcasters he’s happy to speak to in Davos will do so & do so robustly.

BSR: Supreme Court judgement completes the grand heist A few thoughts on the Supreme Court judgment on the currency conversion case. While the outcome is frustrating, the genesis of the problem is rule by decree. Salvation is not in the courts of law.

The neighbours were invited to London for the U.K.-Africa Summit & as one would expect, they obliged. Zimbabwe was not invited. No robust show of solidarity for the troubled neighbour, a harsh reminder that all else is misleading rhetoric. But our deluded rulers don’t learn.
