Yup. You wouldnt draw a cheque on an account where you have made zero deposits. Earning the right to be critical by first having someones back is a concept that unfortunately a lot of people seem to not get.

If you are not willing to give committed support to a young faculty member/postdoc/grad student, you may want to rethink how critical you have earned the right to be. First invest in people so you earn the right to provide constructive criticism.
