U of U Humanities
The College of Humanities is mourning the loss of one of its most inspiring and endearing faculty members. Jeff Metcalf, from the Department of English, has passed away after a years-long battle with cancer that he waged with extraordinary courage and an always vibrant spirit.

Jeff was particularly committed to breaking down the boundaries between classroom education and community engagement. He made outreach projects part of the curriculum for teaching majors and introduced them to alternative modes of Humanities education.

Perhaps his most memorable contribution was the Humanities in Focus course he developed with assistance from Craig Wirth. Students from the Honors program were paired with members of the community from underrepresented groups and together they made very moving, documentary films.

Jeff had come to embody for us an important aspect of our College’s mission: helping people across our community to find their voices and tell their stories. We will miss him as we try to keep his legacy alive.

He was one of my husband's favorite professors. His memoir, Requiem for the Living, is full of excellent writing. I know my husband enjoyed attending one of his plays.
