U.S. Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad
It's past midnight and the intra-Afghan Conference on Peace just concluded on a very positive note. I congratulate the participants - Afghan society representatives across generations, senior govt officials, Taliban - for finding common ground.

I thank Qatar and Germany for organizing. This dialogue gives hope for further progress to end the 40-year long war and the terrible suffering of the Afghan people. We will persist in our efforts by resuming our talks with the Taliban later today.

Intera-Afghan talks were flagged as impossible, it happened. It is time to aim for a complete end to this long, unnecessary and brutal war in forever.

Extremely encouraging joint statement. A few sentences may need better translation to convey the exact meaning. Happy to see some key ideas accepted by the Taliban.

Where are the reassurances that all the gains made by women and religious minorities will be maintained? The Taliban brutally oppressed these groups, and the Afghan people need promises of equality under the law for all.

It is very important after the peace agreement is sighted by all concerned parties to the conflict, Afghanistan will need a peace keeping force to maintain the peace for years to come after 40 years of war
