    A reminder of the immediate aftermath of the La Soufrière volcanic eruption. 🇻🇨

    The launched an urgent US$29M appeal for lifesaving support & recovery in St Vincent and the Grenadines and other affected countries. At least 20K people were displaced by the eruptions of the volcano that covered entire villages in ashes.

    It will take the full commitment of the international community to recover from the La Soufrière eruption. I urge all Member States to support the UN Global Funding Appeal and bridge the $18million gap required to build back better and support St. Vincent and the Grenadines. 🇻🇨

    Families fled Sandy Bay in April for fear of their lives, leaving everything behind - even their most precious possessions. Fortunately due to the swift action of the government there were no lives lost.

    Ash coated houses stand derelict as recovery continues. The volcanic eruption hit the most vulnerable the hardest - some homes and structures were completely destroyed in the red zone at Sandy Bay.

    The destruction in the wake of La Soufrière is worse than you could imagine. Here in the red zone, lava flowed downhill pushing everything out of its path.

    Today I had a mission drive to the Red/Orange Zone of La Soufriere Volcano which recently erupted in St Vincent. I received briefs on measures in place to deal with the fall-out of the eruption & how quickly the authorities responded. 🇺🇳🇻🇨
