You can see the sculptures of sixteen barons and two bishops who were at the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215. They look down over the Chamber and serve as a reminder of the important place it holds in the history of Parliament. 📜

The Library holds this copy of the Magna Carta, unique in its heavy annotation from previous owners, including Andrew Newport MP (1563-1611) and William Kinaston MP (c.1682-1749). 📙

On this day over 800 years ago the Magna Carta was agreed and signed by King John. He was the King of England and was challenged about how he treated his subjects. It stated that the king and government weren't above the law, allowing people to hold their rulers to account.
