H.G. Wells looms large in my biography of E. Nesbit. They were friends who fell out. She admired him hugely & taught him how to play badminton. He thought she was great fun & set aside a room in his house for her visits. This all ended when he seduced her adopted daughter.

More generally it is also an example of the PSC project. Short term tactical aims (“tell him no”) prioritised over strategic goals (“Don’t have a legally binding finding we’re liable as a data controller”) It is like playing chess with someone who shouts “snap” after every move
