The electrodes are made of 1 mm stainless steel. One can find 50 ft spools of this on Amazon/Ebay. They last quite a while, I have probably run at least 20 gels with the same pair so far.

A microscope, gel box, and stir plate, oh my! So neat to see examples of DIY science equipment from ! Brings me back to my days as a microscopy technician when I used eyebrows glued to a toothpick to manipulate sections floating in my knife boat.
