Potential reasons for these negative findings include: 1) a genuine absence of alcohol effects, 2) a dose-dependent effect that only occurs at higher BAC levels, 3) context effects that differ between field and laboratory conditions. Feedback is appreciated!

Interestingly, moderate alcohol consumption (Mean BAC level in the alcohol group 0.04%) did not have an effect on behavioral responses in the Concealed Information Test.

The study was preregistered and sufficiently powered (N=177 participants) to detect even relatively small effects.

However, the previous study did not permit to differentiate between habitual and acute alcohol consumption. We therefore replicated the study in a laboratory environment with random allocation of participants to an alcohol and a control group.

We found a significant correlation between blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and response time costs for concealed identity items indicating that alcohol facilitates the detection of concealed information.

This study is a follow-up of a study we published in 2018. The previous study was a field experiment in a bar/nightclub with participants differing in their alcohol intoxication.

New work by Eva Riechelmann in collaboration with Anne Böckler and Lynn Huestegge. Across 3 experiments, we show a surprising advantage for detecting averted as compared to direct gaze under near-threshold presentation durations.
