Yesterday we received a disappointing response from Minister , after 500 Maynooth students called for the restoration of the Gaeltacht grant. This is our reply. Níl sé ceart go leor. Student teachers need support and they need it now!

This is an atrocious response. Over 500 letters were sent detailing tangible barriers to accessing teacher education - directly related to not only our teacher supply crisis, but also the issue of diversity in the teaching profession, and this is what we got back.

This is simply not good enough. Student teachers struggle enough as it is with the cost of placement (buying new clothes, buying resources, printing 40+ pages A DAY) without the extra €1500 for a MANDATORY trip

1st of all this is rude. We r well aware of the substandard supports available. R u aware, however, that the vast majority of those who need it do not get the full SUSI grant? Are you infact aware that even for those who do, it is not sufficient?

Just before Christmas myself and the Oifigeach Na Gaeilge sent 500 letters all signed by students to asking to reinstate the Gaeltacht grant. After all our hard work months later this is what we receive. Níl sé ceart go leor

What’s a killer is that the decision to reinstate this grant would 1: take a MASSIVE burden off of student teachers 2: only cost the government 2 million Yet they decided to add 1 million to the SAF for PME students??
