You are kinda wandering into strawman territory here, we're sorry to say. What you're describing is bad, of course, though it isn't what happened here. The paragraph reports that there were rumors abound on the future of the registry and within the same breath, it dismisses them

If anything, NPM has been obstructive since mid-June, while our journalists are doing their job to get to the truth, and uncover what is happening within a small company entrusted with an awful lot of source code.

Happy to add NPM Inc CTO 's denial to the story, regarding the rumor of a private npm registry, and have just done so. FWIW we've asked multiple times for on-the-record comment and confirmation either way, and it has repeatedly turned down the opportunity.
