. I really want to move away from Adobe but Affinity Photo seems to be missing both Define Pattern and Pattern Fill tools which I use quite a lot. Any answers? Or alternatives?

We feel anytime an illustrator is asked to create work they should be paid. We’re yet to see a competition where illustrators are asked to create work and all of them are paid.

If they asked illustrators to create original work, asked for copyright and/or used the work commercially, then yes.

We think it’s important to ask why the competitions are being held in the first place. They may not ask for any money, but asking artists to create unpaid original artwork to market your brand or to look for potential illustrators to represent is wrong in our opinion.

Possibly, but that obviously wasn’t the case with your agents competition. Some charities have budgets for artwork, so it isn’t a case of always working for free. Asking the right questions will help an illustrator determine whether or not they should take on the unpaid work.
