Those at the CBIG repository (led by ) are trying to fill exactly that epensive-and-difficult-to-store reagent/specimens gap for neuroscientists here in Canada. A tough problem to be sure but some very smart people are working on it!

The physical materials that go into experiments are at least as important as the data and papers that come out of them. Transparency and sharing as much as possible throughout the research cycle is the only way to get as much as we can out of science.

Though sharing papers & data are key to , & are keen to remind that without also openly sharing materials and reagents, no one can reproduce or build on the experiments. Reagents are the IP of institutions, and often are not shared freely.
