While ponder future of Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, I'm told pending UFA and longtime captain Mikko Koivu has decided he would like to stay in Minnesota beyond Monday's deadline.

Assuming Bogosian clears unconditional waivers today, I expect he will wait until Monday to decide where he wants to play for the remainder of the season. Toronto, Pittsburgh, Carolina and Winnipeg are among the strong contenders.

From the looks of it, seems my old pal John Fielding has a 2020 Kentucky Derby contender, Authentic, trained by Bob Baffert:

Anyway, seeing Tonelli honoured tonight reminded of the typical Canadian version of the six degrees of separation, hockey style, and playing peewee hockey vs. Smrke, a night out in Portland with Bern J and high school days with Fields. Like I said, arcane/inane trivia.

His name is John Fielding. I went to high school with him (Woburn C.I.). His hockey career was rather undistinguished: But my old pal Fields found fame 🐎 and fortune 💰nonetheless, kind of a big deal in business and horse racing:

Bernie played for the Maine Mariners, married a girl from there and her family owned the Old Orchard Beach motel. Small world. Had a great night back then in Portland with Bernie, first at J’s Oyster Bar and then at DiMillo’s. OK, so who’s No. 6?

No. 5 was Bernie Johnston, who played 57 games for Hartford (NHL). I got to know Bernie through his friendship with No. 6 so you can imagine how surprised I was when years later my wife and I checked into an Old Orchard Beach motel one summer and Bernie was working the front desk

As I said, Tonelli is No. 1. Mark Napier is No. 2. Mike McEwen is No. 3. No. 4 is John Smrke, who played 100+ NHL games. In peewee, Smrke played for Ted Reeve Penguins when I played for Scarborough Lions in the MTHL. John’s Dad Stan was an AHL fixture with Rochester Americans.

* Hint: Tonelli was one of them. ** Another hint: Five of the six played NHL games. ***A third hint: The sixth guy, who never played pro, was the guy I went to high school with. I’m gonna guess his net worth is now far greater than all the other guys put together. Name the five.
