Oh I should note that being on the shelf doesn't mean I would recommend the book, just that it fits the criteria. I haven't read a bunch that are on the shelf.

see quarantine stories. I want to see people coping with similar things. I want tenderness and hope. If you want to escape, that's perfectly fine, but there's no need to speak for us all. Anyway, WATCH by :

"Books where ‘race is a factor’ are almost all inevitably about people of color. To cite the race of characters in those books and no others posits whiteness as ‘normal,’ with every other race seen as a deviation." Must-read on mentioning race in professional book reviews. 🔥

When I'm writing a novel and I stall out because something is *wrong* and I don't know what's wrong, it's probably one or more of these things:

This entire debacle exposes how complicit readers and writers are in NOT reading an author’s books closely and whitening their legacy. You can’t read Austen and not think about the Empire b/c she clearly was and yet every Austen adaptation and retelling is a post-colonial fiction

So I want to share something. I talked to my therapist about my cautiousness with Covid and how all the ableds around me are acting like I’m over exaggerating. She pointed out something that feels obvious but I hadn’t actually consciously realised..

I am thinking a lot lately about how most of the media I've sincerely enjoyed over the past couple years has centered the belief that providing emotional satisfaction to your audience is a fundamental good, rather than something the Cool Kids deliberately avoid.

I hate the thing where people talk about and read the same ten books because those are the same ten books that everyone is reading and talking about, and then those books take on a false sense of literary zeitgeist when really, they just had an aggressive publicist
