Tier 2 Rugby
Why exactly do Ireland, a long established Tier 1 nation with thousands of players and millions of revenues, appear to be celebrating beating the likes of Germany and Hong Kong at 7s as if its some amazing achievement? Very weird.

Not weird at all. Up until recently 7s was considered by IRFU an irritation best avoided. Policy changed with arrival of D Nucifora as Perf Director in 2014. Its real success will be when it's self supporting and not pulling players in from 15s

They’re celebrating qualifying for the World Series, which they’ve had to earn the hard way.

Going through a run of games against Russia, Germany, & Hong Kong is hardly the most daunting task for a rugby nation as big as Ireland.

Yes, but they had no team more through choice than lack of ability. It's slightly odd to see Irish players saying they are "speechless" for getting through a run of games against nations far smaller in rugby terms.

It's taken them 5 years to get there, what an ignorant tweet. Yeah they had advantages...and those advantages didn't yield results like the process did.

Ireland could have got a team in the World Series pretty much whenever had they wanted to. For players talking of how "it won't sink in" and "speechless" after beating low level opponents like Jamaica & Hong Kong who they would always be expected to beat is mildly embarrassing.

And let's not forget they have gone through a gruelling process - they literally started at the bottom, it has not been a free ride

Ireland getting past Jamaica, Russia, Germany, & Hong Kong is not exactly "a gruelling process".

You can only beat what’s in front of you, and the Irish did that. They’ve had to develop a 7s culture in Irish rugby that wasn’t there 5 years ago. I’m biased, but surely celebrating winning a tournament that makes the full time next season is fair.

Yes, but don't then make out like it was totally remarkable achievement.
