Yes, I completely agree. They are all composers regardless of what they are called. I suppose the word “composer” has a certain prestige attached to it that is completely unfounded. If they were all called “music writers” it would change things—think about it!

A2: I think I general understanding of work-life balance from admin and it being toted by the district would be extremely helpful. I am lucky to have this support at my school.

I think this is only a small part of it. Class composition has gotten way out of hand since I started teaching. I've certainly learned to say "no" but there are a lot of factors here.

I think consistency definitely helps but so do *reasonable* expectations. By this, I mean having age-appropriate activities that curb some behaviours and compliance issues. You will still have compliance issues because there are so many other factors contributing to it.

I agree on the generalizing! Unfortunately I can’t edit tweets. 😅 This was addressed to those that (through no fault of their own) assume that the word “composing” means classical and on paper. To get them questioning and thinking about why this is their default.

Obviously not all, I agree my first sentence could have been worded better. I just see a lot of posts on the Music Teacher Facebook page that makes me assume this. Just a few posts on there as of late that “inspired” my tweet.

We just finished 3 nights of The Jungle Book Kids with learners on gr 3-6 last week here at MCS. They did such an amazing job. Musicals give opportunities for some learners to shine where they otherwise would not!

Because they’re between 5 and 10 years old! There are also a number of other factors contributing to “non-compliance” like LDs, home life, anxiety disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum, and so many others. It isn’t as simple as just building engagement and asking questions.

When will realize that don’t just belong to classical music. They exist in all genres. Just because you are not writing it down doesn’t mean you are not a composer. Songwriters, MCs, topliners, and beatmakers are all composers too.

This is not so easy. It’s not one or the other. If they aren’t following the class expectations or not “complying,” they will not engage. Many times, no amount of engaging activities can fix that. How many times have I had engaging activities that fell flat with some groups?

And it’s not like all those courses are overly useful either. They could easily get rid of: second-year theory (don’t use anything from that course and spent hours tying to understand it for no reason), keyboard harmony (a relic of another time).

Yes, what I mean is that theory got in the way for jazz. It became to over-academicized. It went from being the music of a marginalized population that everyone loved to music for rich white kids that nobody understands. Perhaps another conversation though.
