Looking through the photos from Royal Ascot 2010 for this afternoon, and found this one of our friend Alistair Haggis. As kind and helpful a person as you could ever wish to meet, and much missed.

USER FRIENDLY (Slip Anchor) was Champion 3yo filly & Horse of the Year in 1992, winning the G1 Oaks, Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks (below) and St Leger. At 4 she won the G1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud before being sold to race in USA, where she won just an 8.5f allowance at Del Mar!

ROUGH QUEST (1986-2016) Rough Quest won 8 races, most famously the 1996 Grand National. He was a high class, strong-travelling horse but needed delivering with precision. He finished 2nd eleven times, and at his best when doing so in the Cheltenham Gold Cup to Imperial Call.

RAVEN'S PASS (Elusive Quality) is the only British trained winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic. His 2008 3yo season was defined by a series of battles with Henrythenavigator whom he finally overcame in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, and then again at Santa Anita.

ASK TOM won 9 of his 20 races and was a top class chaser at 2 miles and a brilliant jumper. His biggest success came in the 1997 G1 Tingle Creek Chase (beating Viking Flagship) and he also won the G1 Maghull Novice Chase, Victor Chandler Chase (at Kempton) and Game Spirit Chase.

BEECH ROAD (1982-2011) Best remembered for that 50/1 victory on a filthy day in the 1989 Champion Hurdle, Beech Road won 18 races. He went on to win the Aintree Hurdle, Spa, Cleeve & Fighting Fifth Hurdles, & was still winning over fences at Cheltenham aged 13 (with a young AP)!

BURROUGH HILL LAD (1976-2004) Seen here parading at Doncaster aged 18, Burrough Hill Lad built an impressive string of victories in the top staying chases from 1983-1985. Injury curtailed his career thereafter and he was never able to attempt a second Cheltenham Gold Cup.

PERSIAN PUNCH (1993-2004) won 20 of his 63 races over 8 seasons and was successful in every stayers' group race bar the Gold Cup. He was ridden to victory by 8 different jockeys and a magnificent statue, partially funded by his fans, stands at Newmarket Racecourse.
