Just as even experienced comics still sometimes die on stage, so experienced palaeographers sometimes find MSS unreadable. While inserting [illegible] in a transcription always feels like a defeat, the age-old struggle between palaeographer and scribe continues...

It is. I am extremely fortunate to have lived there for a year, and I’d move back in a heartbeat.

How many hours a week do you spend pontificating about politics on Twitter? Could at least one of those hours be dedicated instead to fighting for the future of your profession?

A pretty yellow, green, orange and red C in Zurich, Zentralbib. Ms. C 12, Gallican Psalter. I find yellow such a surprise in ninth-century manuscripts. I don't know that I should, the medical manuscripts I look at are mostly quite plain, so I have little to base my surprise on.

A good thread about the challenges of being an independent/unaffiliated researcher and how those of us with affiliations can help. Also a good opportunity to reiterate that I will always happily find you article PDFs, EEBO scans, and good Toronto beer recommendations (research!).

I wonder if my colleagues in the US understand the scale of ? Academics, librarians, & support staff at 74 universities in the UK are striking; if this were a similar proportion of colleges in the US, workers at over 2000 institutions would be withholding their labor.

A heart breaking sight at ubc this morning: has cut down a majestic 200ft Douglas-fir, known to be the tallest tree on campus. It and the surrounding forest turned into a nightmarish scene if roots, soil, and hog fuel ripped from the heart of our community.
