To my herp people, I am very deliberately using the word “lasso” over “noose”cause as a VERY BLACK person, the word noose & the action being described as noosing by white people has always made me very uncomfortable due to past & recent history. Think about it.

You're looking at the first ever image of a black hole. It was captured by the project.

This week you're seaching for an orante tree lizard, Urosaurus ornatus. At the Picacho peak summit, I sat on his turf & he ran up on me (literally on my elbow) to let me know whose boss! You'll have until 9pm MT to . Post guesses with Good luck!🦎

Even with all the venomous snakes and big cats in the places I’ve done field work, the biggest potential danger is PEOPLE. So much more so when you’re a woman. This is common knowledge among those who work in the field. It is NOT OKAY. We must do better.

🐍❤️🐸 imposter syndrome has yet again reared it’s ugly head 🙃 But let’s not dwell. I’ll focus on my skills: Excellent 🐍 handler, good writer & editor, usually get caudal blood on 1st try, & few things break that I can’t fix. your turn

But, I’ve also found plenty dead and not flipped over so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hm, I’ve actually found a few captive snakes dead in their enclosures with ventral side up. But..It may depend on how the snake was murdered. Poison or decapitation, for instance, might cause a bit of thrashing, and incidental belly-up posture post-mortem. 🐍☠️

"Our data…strongly support the conclusion that papers authored by women have lower acceptance rates & are less well cited than are papers authored by men in ecology." I am so grateful to & colleagues for their important series of studies on gender & publishing in EEB!

"Sandy, I don't really see you as a person of color. You're so bright. You're from here and don't have an accent. You speak English well."--words said to me by a long-time professional associate during a diversity-themed conference on the day I sat on a microaggressions panel.

Officer at Heathrow thought it was so funny that I was a fish biologist that he told his buddies and laughed. So here's your reminder that women can dress like this (left) and still do that (right). In fact, we can do whatever the f*ck we want 💁‍♀️🐟

Man, I relate to this hard: “So I saw this snake in my yard. Black—or maybe brown..I think? ..not sure. Long. slender. Really fast. Didn’t get a good look. Do you know what it was??” (Bonus points if there is a *super* blurry pic that somehow only further obfuscates things)
