No transfer fee involved, which suggests DCU simply cleared his record contract from its books. Additional details asap ...

Rooney, on whether he's motivated rest of MLS season: "That won’t be a problem, at all. I am a player who wants to play, wants to win. People watching the all-star game could see that. A few players on the pitch didn’t try, but when I am on the pitch, I want to win."

Why no transfer fee? One source says, "Accommodating and supporting a guy we care about. It hurts but this is a people biz." Unclear whether demanding a fee would have prevented a deal, which, in turn, could've turned into a bad situation for the duration of his stay.

DCU is deep in talks with Argentine winger Mateo Garcia (Las Palmas/Aris). It would be an estimated $3 million transfer. Trade talks continue, as well, and could hinge of whether the Garcia deal gets done.

Also, two names that will come up in the rumor mill as possible January transfers: Mario Balotelli and Mesut Ozil. Doesn't mean one or the other is on the way, but there has been contact between the sides. Save that for the next .

One of Ozil's reps will meet with DCU officials next week in Washington, I'm told.

D.C. United has just traded with Vancouver for veteran midfielder Felipe Martins. Financial stuff goes to the Whitecaps. Martins, 28, has appeared in 18 matches this season, 13 starts.

Trade perhaps. Not likely any more signings before window closes. Asad is out; wants too much $, which is also scaring off possible MLS trade partners. Jose Torres remains in mix but he's not physically ready, so if he signs, it's to prepare for '20. Mateo Garcia won't happen.

I'm sure Ozil's reps want to meet...and DCU will have an open door policy. But, talk about a contrast from Rooney...Ozil's reputation is not good when it comes to being a positive team member.

I'd dispute that a bit. He generally seems really well liked in the Arsenal locker room. It's his public perception that's the issue. Which is kind of crazy given all of the stuff he does with charities. He's just not a vocal, demonstrative person.
