I tweeted some concerns about the Zhenhua story, including about the sourcing, when the story broke (see linked thread). What else do you think should’ve been done?

Tweeting this again to emphasize what a heroic and illuminating piece of research it is. The most compressive and scrupulously document-driven look at China’s surveillance state so far. Kudos to Jessica Batke and

I agree that these efforts should receive higher priority. But I'm uncomfortable with the implication that they're not because the US "doesn't really care." Considerable evidence to the contrary - & many who care deeply support punitive measures such as sanctions.

Hey , it's our favorite phrase: "In Xiqiao’s neighboring district Shunde, officials sought in 2018 to create a “3-dimensional prevention & control network” centered on “face big data,” w/images collected at hospitals, schools, transit hubs, & places of business."

Voting early was the major difference, which I think is as much COVID as it is a matter of switching states? Process in both 2016 & 2020 was straightforward, & thankfully not difficult. But at a personal level, 2016 was obviously a very different election experience....

As someone who works on surveillance & has to work incredibly hard to make sure the info I provide is solid, this really worries me. We need attention to this problem. We don't need fabricated evidence.

Thread from on Zhenhua, which I noted at the time story broke appeared to be an unprotected Elastic Search database, not a confidential "leak" which was at blog stated (see screenshot):
