- When faced with thousands of students whose dreams were dashed, John Swinney dug in and defended the system over the pupils.

Lots of glum faces on the SNP benches after & contributions. I think the reality of the impact on John Swinney’ failures in education and on their constituents is sinking in. Swinney may survive today but the damage is done and confidence in him shattered.

Enough of the SNP’s double standards Tonight’s result does not change the fact that John Swinney has let down an entire year group of Scotland’s young people. The fact he remains in post just goes to show the SNP’s brass neck.

The Scottish Parliament had a choice today: back pupils, parents and teachers across Scotland or back a failed Education Secretary. Unfortunately for young people it chose the latter.

John Swinney was the third SNP speaker in the no confidence debate 20 years ago. He argued that overseeing exam results was the responsibility of the Education Secretary and because of that failure, he was unfit for office.

The Scottish Greens may have bailed out John Swinney on this occasion but this must be last chance saloon for the Education Secretary. The majority of political parties don't have faith in him, and it's clear neither do the public.

Here's Mike Russell explicitly calling for the removal of Sam Galbraith 20 years ago over his failure to deliver exam results in 2000.

As gets to her feet to defend the Education Secretary, here's a reminder of the position she took 20 years ago in the aftermath of the 2000 exam results scandal. John Swinney should take responsibility and step aside.

20 years ago, Nicola Sturgeon, Mike Russell and John Swinney brought forward this motion of no confidence against the Education Secretary, Sam Galbraith, for the 2000 exam results scandal. They argued it warranted his removal from office. Those same standards must apply today.

. presided over one of the biggest scandals in the history of devolution, which shattered the life chances of thousands of Scottish pupils. Her belated apology is not good enough for the teachers, parents and pupils who were *affected* by this fiasco.

We deleted a tweet because of one mistaken letter. You took a week to correct the grades of 75,000 pupils.

✔️125,000 pupils unfairly downgraded ✔️Teachers' credibility questioned ✔️A humiliating U-turn on blended learning ✔️International PiSA scores at record lows ✔️Named persons legislation struck down by the courts John Swinney clearly isn't up to the job. It's time for him to go.

Later today, MSPs will fall in behind Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP to keep John Swinney in his job. In doing so, they'll save someone they know is not up to running Scottish education. But they'll also accept some responsibility for the inevitable next education crisis.

It will take years to repair the damage that John Swinney has inflicted on Scottish education. But we can start that process today by voting for this motion of no confidence against the education secretary

Today's motion of against John Swinney. In just four years as Education Secretary, he has presided over some of the biggest setbacks in Scottish education in the history of devolution. He's clearly out of his depth and it's time for him to go.
