In August 1897, the Superintendent’s Residence was completed. This building symbolized the rank and prestige of the superintendent’s position. The building remains a dominant and impressive feature of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal.

September 7th, 1895, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal operated electrically for the first time. The Majestic, a 700 passenger steamer, locked through. Two days later, the official grand opening of the canal took place.

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal welcomed its first vessel through the lock on October 5th, 1894 – the W.A. Rooth! At this time the lock’s electrification was not yet complete, so the tug had to be locked through by hand.

A Notice to Contractors was announced on October 26th, 1888. Hugh Ryan and Company was ultimately awarded the contract, bidding $1 282 567 on the project. Construction of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal began in 1889.
