Looking up a timeline of scifi, and some early titles, some common themes already stand out. Many works categorized as "proto-science fiction" discuss utopias, enough that they form a subgenre, eg. Thomas More's Utopia.

That is, similar to the overlap with works in philosophy and politics (Plato's Republic), or theology, people are frequently preoccupied with conceptualizing ideal societies that last eternally in the same stable structure.
