After Ft Mifflin fell on 11/15/1777, Ft Mercer located on the NJ side of the river on the opposite shore lay exposed. Howe sent a column of 3,000 men under Cornwallis to break the blockade. On Nov 20, Gen Varnum ordered Mercer evacuated. The Delaware was now a British river.

Washington was painfully aware of the tremendous importance the pitiful fortress assumed. "Nothing in the course of this campaign has taken up so much of the attention and consideration of myself and all the general officers." ~~In a letter to Henry Laurens on Fort Mifflin.

It IS remembered, but I personally can't speak on it with good intelligence. It's one of those events that involved Native Americans that is sadly often overlooked as you know.

No one ever talks about Maj Simeon Thayer of RI. He commanded a company under Daniel Morgan during the Battle of Quebec & was captured. He evacuated Ft Mifflin's garrison in 1777. Pancake mentions him in his book "1777".
