An important idea reenforced at 2019 Academy is that there is not one universal approach for all mentees. Learn their communication style, understand their expectations, and adjust accordingly. I find this especially true with mentees.

I was asked this week: How do Early Career Researchers keep up with/review literature? I’m probably too old now to answer accurately - so could you please reply with what you do/use? (Perhaps prelim data for a poll) Please RT! Thanks!

Being competitive is not inherently good or bad - it all depends on how you approach it. Destructive competition says: I want you to get worse so that I can feel like I’m better. Productive competition says: I want you to get better so that I’m motivated to be better.

As an assistant prof, every time someone told me “tenure is no big deal” I thought “no, you’re just squandering your academic freedom.” If you’re fortunate enough to have the privilege of tenure, use it to speak up and make things better for those around you.

I don't have PhD students going on the market, but if I did, here's some of what I would tell them after serving on a dozen search committees, reviewing hundreds of applications, and sitting thru dozens and dozens of job talks, breakfasts during the interview...

A huge hurdle I had to overcome early in my PhD, was being made to feel foolish for mistakes and knowledge I didn't yet have. It stopped me from asking questions that could have accelerated my progress. Students - you deserve support, not shame
