What’s also shameful is that he refuses to engage with survivors at all. He chose to respond to a fellow journalist but nobody with a funny Slavic name which he has problems spelling. Shameful.

The Swedish royal family enabled the Nazi Holocaust in the 1940s. Now they’re enabling genocide triumphalism of Peter Handke.

7. The impact of for Handke will be long lasting & indicates a conscious decision of those holding power in the West that time has come to go back to the project of ‘painful but realistic restoration of Christian Europe’.

6. Causes of the indifference are cultural & have to be viewed in the global context of Chinese concentration camps, Rohingya genocide, 🇮🇳 gov islamophobic policies, French obsession with Islam & the long present otherization in Europe.

5. Likely same outpouring of disgust & pressure would have happened had Handke been a racist, homophobe, or a male misogynist. His sin is islamophobic genocide-denial and that’s apparently not worthy of making powerful enemies, or making colleagues uncomfortable.

4. Bottom line: allies were willing to say the right thing (that Handke is a genocide denier) but not willing to do the right thing like criticizing Tokarczuk. Had Handke denied the Holocaust, most Western countries would have boycotted & cut all ties w 🇸🇪 royal family.

3. Were unwilling to go all the way in trying to prevent Handke from being canonized-w several exceptions. For example, there are almost no Western writers who denounced the shameful indifference of . I challenge everyone to prove me wrong on this.

2. The most important media voices got engaged, excellent articles were written, protests were organized, Muslim-inhabited Balkan countries boycotted ...yet Handke won & got overwhelming support or tacit approval from Europe. Sad truth is that even allies in the West

1. W. Balkans English-speaking world is outraged. The truth-based/ICTY narrative proved to be too weak to stop the unthinkable from happening: being normalized. What we’ve witnessed is a resounding defeat of the liberal interventionist elite which stood by Balkan Muslims

Also the pompous self-importance of Handke and his literary defenders (including apparently Karl Ove Knausgard) is really something to behold. Barring a major course correction no one should take these people and their little awards seriously again.

I'm not so sure that a soft-focus article such as this would have been written about say, a Holocaust denier.

Balanced??? Some things cannot be balanced, . But when it comes to the , has lost so much credibility this past couple of years that this poor attempt at whitewashing ’s genocide denial should not come as a surprise.

Hi why did your piece not include victims’ voices? This is clearly a puff piece. You’re promoting genocide denial.

A dulling familiarity to the coverage of what is emerging as (yet another) anti-Semitic massacre in Jersey City. Far-right extremism has become such a prevalent feat of contemporary U.S. politics that it has become normalized. There is an added degree of horror in just that fact.
