in function terms: you don't want to write string.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + string.slice(1) to uppercase the first character of a string every place you wan to do it you'd hide that inplementation in a re-usable function that takes that string as an argument

props are function arguments if you're able to write an application without function arguments, i guess you wouldn't need props either
