Or maybe "firm civility"? I'm beginning to think this is like "honest loyalty" v. "loyalty and honesty."

Well, there is something you can do about it, actually, which is be the bug with firmness and civility.

Some days, you're just going to be the bug, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Linus Torvalds being just 48 is a really big surprise to me. I don’t know why I assumed he must have be older.

I'd say that all the western countries have forms of capitalism - we're really arguing about which type. I don't think it's useful to bring, say, Venezuela or Russia or something into the dispute.

Definitely fragile. FWIW, I both enjoy the society European social democracy produces and find it utterly stifling in many ways.

That's interesting. So where does this intuition make you come down? Broadly against welfare programs? Also, is it mistrust of our government, or mistrust of all government? Like, would you trust model European government to distribute social welfare?

I hadn't read that particular post, but I'm familiar with Will Wilkinson. I agree, they're interesting.

Yes, I've always been a republican. But that party has various wings, as we've all discovered to our chagrin. Nativists, libertarianish people, national security hawks, business interests. The proportions of those are, uhh, different than I thought. Understood on your views!

Oh, I'm not a member of the libertarian party, and have never been. But I think it's fair to call someone who wants a dramatically smaller government a small-l libertarian on those issues.
