I received an email from Twitter (for some reason half in Polish, half in English) telling me that there will be a new daily API cap of 100,000 user timeline requests, but that Pinboard will be exempt from this limit. All hail Pinboard.

Here's Facebook giving money to Devin Nunes on June 29. Facebook makes a fetish of being politically neutral, but its top executives are paying to get Devin Nunes re-elected in the company's name. 🤔

I agree with you, and that's how I host my own site, but I'm interested in the economics of 'halfway to the cloud' and how it has changed in the past seven years

I made this spreadsheet of high-memory dedicated server options back in 2012, and am curious how this world looks now. What are your favorite options for leasing a large dedicated server in 2019?

My take on it is this: people in a campaign context have a very limited cognitive budget for security. Specific, positive recommendations (use browser X and device Y) don't eat into that budget. Discussion of trade-offs burns right through it. Hence the specific instructions

In the context of campaigns, you can assume everybody uses their personal device for everything. In contexts where device boundaries are actually enforced (like Capitol Hill), 100% of sensitive conversations will move to the least secured device.

You could always look at the substantively identical that is targeted at congressional campaign staff.

Also in 2018 we had scare stories from the 2016 election to try to motivate people and to give cover to those on staff who were pushing for better security. In 2018... nothing much happened in spite of abysmal practices. Good luck to any chump trying to secure campaigns in 2020.

I had this literal conversation a dozen times. Ditto for moving off of Android, even when offered a free new iPhone.

I could never even get a meeting with while doing security training off that Tech Solidarity checklist for over 40 Democratic campaigns. It colors my outlook.

there was an ad network that used delicious’s embed as their hosting mechanism once. 25mbps sustained for just that one user.

That's pretty impressive. Delicious has been down for a few days now (because I can't figure out how to python) and is still getting 20+ hits per second from an ancient ecosystem of spam bots

I've thought about this a lot—there are only 18 users with > 200K bookmarks. Pinboard Premium Executive Diamond Gold Edition?

Current Pinboard capacity is 99 terabytes, which would take me 92 days to upload to the cloud and cost $2,300/month to store once there. Downloading it back from S3 would cost $9,100.

People get anxious when I post this stuff, so I will reassure you that users only get kicked off when they try to bolt a feed reader subscribed to the entire internet onto their Pinboard account. "Bookmark links, not too many, mostly text."

I don't even know what to say to the Pinboard user whose archived bookmarks are taking up an entire TERABYTE of disk space. Oh wait—"no". That is what I am going to say to them.
