You are told Academia is full of amazing benefits - independent research, travel, access to university services, flexible hours - all of which is true. What you won't be told is you have to fight to use these benefits. So fight. Fight for yourself and for those who come after.

Build a support network of people who understand what you're going through. Check in with yourself regularly and learn to recognize signs of burnout before it gets too bad. Take breaks, eat well and exercise, and do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it!

You don't have to go through the PhD experience alone. It will be challenging, but it's easier to make it through when you build a support network of people online and IRL who understand what you're going through. Coming out the other side you will have life-long friends!

In a seminar for grad students today on surviving grad school, the professor suggested that we should remember that the fellow grad students in our cohort are our competitors. No. Don't do that. Cultivate friendships, support each other, commiserate w/ and cheer for each other.

Growing up, my life was pretty mediocre. But in a good way. I hadn't dealt with any big tragedies and, overall, I was happy and healthy. I did well in maths and science at school and started a Bachelor of Science in Genetics and Chemistry. I think my 2n…

Fantastic article from "The community gave to me what I had seen it give to so many other scientists: life-changing connections with others whom I never would have met in my daily life." (and a shoutout to )

If by "arts&crafts, backpacks, and TI-89 calculators" includes epoxying back together lab equipment, what I carry my lunch to work with, and solving buffer recipes with, yes, my High school TI83, I'm still doing that as a postdoc. ... that puts me in the 29th grade?😯

Looking back on 22 years of arts&crafts, backpacks, and TI-89 calculators. It's my last first day of school! asked for our back-to-school pictures, so here we are. I've been a "student" since I was 5 years old. And, honestly, my final year…
