It is a perception reflected in polls that Nicola Sturgeon has handled the COVID crisis competently. This is impressive given Scotland’s excess deaths are, in fact, among the worst in Europe. And Sturgeon’s government does not have an enviable record on care home deaths.

Perception matters when it comes to the ballot box. Rightly or wrongly, perception in Scotland is Scotland’s FM is handling this better than the UK PM. Successive polls now show support for Scottish independence above 50% & rising. Unionists in Scotland are well aware of the risk
