Nazi propaganda was simplistic, emotional, repetitive, and uncompromising. - Holcaust Museum. I feel a bit like I’m looking at America’s future right now.

He also measured people the same way imperialists studied aborigines in order to other them.

His racial policies and degregation were extreme leading up to the wwii and most military and police did nothing to stop this level of stereotyping. They often cooperated and encouraged it.

The government banned illegal emigration of Jews and arrested anyone who aided refugees.

The size and scale of persecution (starting with exclusion from daily German life and business) is heart crushing. Every number I’ve read has been in the tens of thousands.

And America was no help either. “No country would be expected to receive a greater number of immigrants than is permitted by existing legislation” -Roosevelt, on his international conference. And refugee assistance was expected to be financed by private organizations.

It’s ironic how much Christianity and the enlightenment used Judaism (and Jews) as a scapegoat for injustice. And also horrifying.

Thousands of synegogues were burned and not allowed to be rebuilt. 25,000 Jews were arrested without cause. (That second bit feels eerily familiar).

Roma were targeted in the forced sterilization programs because “He German people will be freed from this public nusdisncd only when the Gypsies’ fertility is completely eliminated.” Nazis used uteruses as a way to gain political power and oppress people.

To Christians who claim they played no part in the oppression. Or cite Bonhoeffer as their scapegoat. Both Protestant and Catholic churches openly supported the regime. No mention was made of orthodox Christian churches though.

That said, the Protestant Confessing Church said unquestioning obedience was wrong (but didn’t comment on the horrific policy?) and most Protestant churches opposed hitler’s plan to unite them into one church of the state.

Again, Hilter used women as a way to control the party and information, but instead of decreased fertility, he encouraged increased fertility.

A huge driving force of the Nazi’s was usurping the democracy Germany tried to establish. Done so by requiring military recruits to swear loyalty to Hitler personally and revoking the Germany judiciary’s independent status. Any resistance against the regime was now criminal.

Adding to that, a police state led by the SA and then the more elite SS, permeated fear and held a precarious order in Germany.

Jews tried to emigrate, but the rest of the world (except certain Latin America countries and Shanghai) feared they would be overrun by Jews. America did not change its refugee policy to aid their plight and remain calloused. And their refugee quota was only filled once.

And more horrific, the US Coast Gaurd prevented a ship from harboring, and it was sent back to Europe. The some of the Jews who were on it died in the holocaust, unable to find a haven.

America did, however, worked hard to save “persons of exceptional merit” and “those of superior intellectual attainment”. Which makes me angrier than if we did nothing entirely. Because it’s a similar understanding that the Nazis have: Some people are worth more than others.

Hitler tried to avoid war initially, but on Sept 1, 1939, he invaded Poland and the country was occupied in less than a month. Britain and France declared war on Germany within days, but did not come to Poland’s aid.

After they defeated Poland, they shipped thousands of citizens to concentration camps, and used general terror to subdue the rest who were for all intents and purposes insulated because of their inferior racial breeding. Education was also limited to prevent an unprising.
