Many are at risk of language deprivation because of this variability in language outcomes. ASL is 100% accessible to sighted, deaf children. Why risk withholding ASL (as well as lipreading in this case) in the event AVT doesn’t work?

This chart from Niparko et al. (2010) looks at language comprehension and expression in implanted kids. Each colored line is a child. This shows the wide variability of language outcomes in this population relative to hearing kids, even in those implanted before 18 months.

Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen you asleep. One time I woke up at 3:27am and you were watching something on your laptop

For years, fans of THE MATRIX have discussed the film through a trans lens. If you’ve heard the theory before or just learned about it, here’s a thread breaking down the trans allegory of the film, from trans writers and critics. Welcome to the desert of the real. (thread)

Refusing to allow deaf children access to signed or spoken language is language deprivation, and it's flat out discrimination. Deaf students have every right to access language fully.

A deaf person being able to speak doesn’t make them a “successful” deaf person. A deaf person being able to lip read doesn’t make them a “successful” deaf person. There are as many Deaf experiences as there are deaf people. We aren’t only successful when we pass as hearing.

This is how I was raised. My parents made fun of my voice and made me sit on my hands to talk. No hearing aids till early 30s and no ASL till mid 30s.

I want to also mention that I’m NOT SURPRISED by this abuse at all. This is not news. This is our reality. Our struggle. Our everyday battle. We still have a long way to go.

Everyone whining about feeling exhausted after a 2 hour zoom meeting--that's listening fatigue. You had to work harder in conversation to follow it. It's a slice of the feeling that deaf people get often from trying to extract meaning from speech and sound.

This article is heartbreaking. Oral schools still exist and the deaf community carries severe trauma from those schools. The pandemic just heightened what never made sense for deaf children... Learning to hear. Let them be and it is beautiful to be deaf and sign.
