Lampreys are an ancient lineage of jawless fish. Fossils show that they hasn't evolved much for over 100 million years. Many lamprey species are parasitic and for food they latch on to a host and suck its blood. The parasitic sea lamprey can reach over a meter long.

I used to see lampreys migrating to fresh water to spawn every spring in CT. We had a fish ladder around a small dam and they’d use those creepy mouths to hold the walls as they squiggled up the ladder

The great lakes was seriously impacted with sea-lampreys that were in ballast of ocean freighters that came into the lake system and dumped ballast. W/no natural predators they really decimated fish populations for a number of years.

That mouth is purely nightmare material. I’m inclined to wish they did have jaws!
