The B52 decked out in lights reminds me of the Atlas ICBM dressed up like Santa. “Ho ho ho, good children get vaporized but bad children get to die from radiation poisoning!”

It’s beginning to feel a lot like ! There are rumors that Santa (AKA Threat Object Claus) is constantly tracked so that it can be destroyed if it becomes hostile.

That is simultaneously adorable and the worst thing I have ever seen.

The trauma of the nuclear and now climate terrors of the Anthropocene are under-discussed as a grossly prevalent negative impact. Especially on children. I mean, I have xanax, I don’t know how kids do it.

I was a child in the final years of the Cold War. I had nightmares about nuclear weapons until my 20's. Now my nightmares are about vaguely-delineated cryptofascism. I'm nothing if not topical.

I rarely have nightmares on nuclear topics which is kind of a surprise.

Santa and his B-47 the “Red Sleigh” can deliver up to 30 megatons of radioactive holiday cheer per sortie.

When was the last time that there wasn't considered to be an imminent apocalyptic threat to human civilisation? Pre-WWII?

Considered to be “by whom” and whose “civilizations” are key questions here? But certainly, I would argue, for much of the Northern Hemisphere at least since WWII it’s been pretty unrelenting. There have of course been less widespread millenarian movements & moral panics etc?

I regard (mostly) nuclear tech as an intensification of pre-existing or at least resonant threads of beliefs? There’s a lot of “we worried about it but now we can REALLY do it” starting in 1945?

I'm thinking about the lack of political utility of the CC threat because there is no defined enemy apart from capitalism itself, hence the lack of action. Are there any good texts on the impact of the cold war nuclear threat in the third world? Other than proxy wars I mean.

There may be but I’m not super aware of any in exactly that vein. ’s work on nuclearity in parts of Africa including Apartheid South Africa points to some of the impacts. Wittner’s books on The Struggle Against the Bomb notes that for much of the 1/2

2/2 post-colonial, newly liberated, colonial, & underdeveloped world there were often other concerns considered more immediately pressing although also strategic manipulation of US-USSR CW fears to acquire aid, support, etc.

Thank you. this is what I am partly interested in, I think Namibian independence war was the last proxy war? Namibia victorious as USSR-aligned country 1 year before USSR collapse. Nukes in Africa v interesting question, as is postcolonial states taking advantage of situation.
