UC Berkley gives precedence to diversity statements in hiring process: A person’s candidacy is terminated if their statement does not reach a set cut-off score. Rather than promoting diversity, this process serves to promote ideological conformity.
UPDATE: My Chicago colleague, law and philosophy professor Brian Leiter, has given this post a shout-out on his Leiter Reports site. More important, he adds that there are lawyers (some of whom he …

These remind me of the loyalty oaths that were used to weed out heretics during the 1950s. Interestingly, also in the University of California system.

I’m curious how this would be viewed in court given that theres more subjectivity in the process (candidates write a statement to be judged rather than sign a standard statement). Based on how the Harvard admissions case went tho I anticipate this to be in practice for a while.

This is disgusting if you all are complaining that hiring practices value diversity in their candidates. Ideological diversity? Give me a break. Race intersects with other identities & is tied to recent historical events (e.g. Jim Crow) that make for underrepresentation today.

Of course that would be the outcome. I hope the public takes these incidents as indicators of falling standards. But consequences will play out over a long time scale. So a university's reputation might stay in tact for a while, assuming they don't wake up and correct the mistake

"Candididacy is terminated" feels like a very alarming way of saying "doesn't progress to the next stage of getting hired". When 120 people apply for a job, 119 of them have their candidacies terminated.

Having been on a search committee at a different school, diversity statements can cover commitment to enhancing diversity in many different dimensions. There's no more ideology filtering there than a CV demonstrating a commitment to research.
