While you're saying no to higher NPS fees, please call your representative and request a larger budget for the National Park Service so this isn't even an issue.

The sad truth of humanity is that almost anyone is capable of unspeakable acts, and most have no idea until it happens.

8/In 2007, Cheyenne & Arapahoe successfully petitioned to protect site of the massacre. Due to its scared nature, Natl Park Service limits access to actual creek bed to tribes only. Colorado finally apologized for the massacre in 2014. Nearest town to the site? Named Chivington.

7/Chivington tried to pass it off as a victory. But Capt Silas Soule, whose entire company refused to attack, formally testified the truth to a tribunal. Soule was murdered in Denver a few weeks later. His killers were known, but neither they nor Chivington were ever punished.

6/ After the smoke cleared, Chivington's men scalped the dead, regardless of whether they were women, children or infants. Chivington and his men dressed their weapons, hats and gear with scalps, human fetuses, and female genitalia.

5/As the attack continued, toddlers were used as target practice. A fetus was cut out of a living woman, both left to die. One Cheyenne woman stood up in front of rampaging soldiers & slit the throats of her children, rather than subject them to the horrors of rape & mutilation.

4/ The only possible shelter was the bed of Sandy Creek. As Chivington & his soldiers continued the slaughter, the Cheyenne & Arapahoe became so desperate they tried to bury into the sand to escape the bullets. Soldiers yanked them out by their hair & scalped them alive.

3/ As the villagers, almost entirely women and children, approached the soldiers of the 1st & 3rd Colorado Cavalry, they begged for their lives, still thinking it was a mistake. The cavalry mowed them down. At that point, the villagers began to run.

2/The Sand Creek Massacre was unprovoked. When soldiers opened fire, many Indians ran out waving, thinking it was a mistake: their village had abided by every rule the Army threw at them. Chief Black Kettle had an US flag given to him during peace talks flying from his teepee.

A thread 1/ACTUAL largest mass shooting in US was Nov 1864. Col J.Chivington killed 170+ peaceful Cheyenne & Arapahoe at Sand Creek, CO. His reason? He was a racist asshole. He "came to kill Indians. Kill & scalp all, big & little; nits make lice."
