There’s nothing shameful about needing help - we all do sometimes. It’s a tragedy that the people who grow our food often can’t afford to feed themselves, but they (and all Americans) should have access to the help they need - without stigma or shame.

Love BLTs? that it will cost you, on average, $2.17 to make this classic American lunch, but the farmers who grew the ingredients will receive just $0.18 of that?

According to the , slightly more than half of farm households have had negative farm income in recent years - if farmers aren't even breaking even, it makes sense that they would rely on SNAP and other programs just to feed their families.

NFU is glad to see that SNAP cuts are not included in the Senate Farm Bill draft. Many family farmers rely on food assistance to feed themselves and their families, and earn income from the same programs at farmers markets.

"With sufficient power, companies can commission studies, rewrite regulations, bulldoze neighborhoods. When a company comes to monopolize a market, it ceases to be merely a company. It becomes an institution so powerful that it can rule over people like a government."

"Monopolies don’t just exploit consumers & workers in their part of the economy. Their influence propagates through the entire system. If one part of an industry consolidates, then all the other parts of the industry will feel pressure to consolidate too."

Farming has a higher rate of suicide than any other occupation, in part due to the high-stress nature of the job & economic uncertainty. Unfortunately, international tariffs & escalating trade tensions may add yet another stressor to the already long list:

Crop insurance promotes environmental stewardship by requiring producers to meet wetlands and highly erodible lands protections in order to qualify for premium discounts. We must in the Farm Bill.
