Good morning! NC-12 remains open and passable on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands today, with some sand and minor ocean overwash in spots, especially at high tide. Drive with caution and SLOW DOWN when you approach standing water. Stay safe out there!

Here's the latest report on NC12: From Bonner Bridge to Hatteras NC12 is open and passable with sand and standing water at various locations. Drive carefully! On Ocracoke Island the road is closed from the Pony Pens to Ferry Dock due to dune breach & ocean over wash (pictured).

Here's a look at NC 12 near the Pea Island Visitor Center as we approached high tide Monday morning. As you can see, the road is passable, but with some ocean overwash and sand on it. If you have to drive along NC12 today, please drive with extreme caution and slow down.

We reached a major milestone yesterday on the Bonner Bridge project... as concrete was poured on the final road deck of the new bridge. There's still more to do... but if all goes as planned, we hope to see traffic on a brand-new Bonner Bridge in mid-January!

Morning update: There is still standing water on the road from sound side flooding in Waves & Salvo. Drivers should avoid the area until the water goes back down, and monitor or call 511 for road condition updates

Hi, we have made tremendous recent progress widening NC 87 in Spring Lake near Fort Bragg and NC 210, and now we are conducting a traffic analysis to determine more roadway improvements that we can plan. We hope to announce more information sometime next year.

This photo shows sand that washed onto NC 12 in Ocracoke. Repairs to pavement are being made and a protective berm built to keep sand from washing onto the Outer Banks thoroughfare. N.C. 12 isn't open for travel on the northern part of Ocracoke Island.
