It's that time of year again! Speed limits have dropped on several sections of NC 12 along the Outer Banks to help keep motorists and pedestrians safe during the busy summer season:

NCDOT will be doing some herbicide spraying at the Bodie Island Pond beginning May 16 as part of a wetlands mitigation project. The lighthouse boardwalk may be closed during spraying, but the visitor center and lighthouse will remain OPEN:

While conducting a quarterly survey of the physio/biological conditions of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge beach last week, NCDOT Biologists Kathy Herring and Jared Gray, helped facilitate the rescue of an injured juvenile bald eagle. Great work!

Attention, OBX Mariners: We have two Oregon Inlet safety zone channel closures scheduled this week: on Tuesday, April 3 from 2-4 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 4 from 12-2 p.m: Thanks for your patience as we work to complete the new Bonner Bridge!

NC 12 is a great place to bike! Depending on where you are, there are areas of with off-road side paths and long segments with wide shoulders. Traffic does pick up considerably during the summer, but in the more populated areas, there's often parallel streets with lower traffic.

Now that the sun is up, our folks on the ground tell us that NC12 is passable all the way through... with a few areas of moderate soundside flooding south of the Bonner Bridge. Drive carefully and keep an eye out for our crews out there doing dune work! Thanks!
