The road is currently open and passable. However, there are areas with standing water on them, so be sure to give yourself extra time to get to your destination, and drive carefully.

July 4th week - NCDOT will suspend lane closure construction activities for most major road projects. Also, law enforcement will be cracking down on drinking and driving. In 2018, more than 130 people lost their lives due to alcohol-related crashes in NC.

NC-12 has reopened in Rodanthe. It may take a little while for the traffic to clear, but the road is now open in both directions.

A heads up for motorists on the Outer Banks: Due to a serious vehicle crash, NC-12 is closed in both directions near Corbina Drive in Rodanthe. Emergency crews are on the scene. We hope to have the road reopened before 6 p.m.

If you're headed from Ocracoke to Hatteras this summer, keep an eye out for a new traffic pattern for traffic waiting to board the ferry. Crews are currently working to fix the waiting lanes that washed away over the winter:

NCDOT will be doing some herbicide spraying at the Bodie Island Pond beginning May 16 as part of a wetlands mitigation project. The lighthouse boardwalk may be closed during spraying, but the visitor center and lighthouse will remain OPEN:

While conducting a quarterly survey of the physio/biological conditions of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge beach last week, NCDOT Biologists Kathy Herring and Jared Gray, helped facilitate the rescue of an injured juvenile bald eagle. Great work!
