While ICESat-2 uses its laser altimeter ATLAS to measure heights on Earth 🌎, the LOLA laser altimeter on the spacecraft measures heights on the Moon 🌒- including the Sea of Tranquility where Neil Armstrong and landed 50 years ago.

ICESat-2's path took it over the low-lying headland and across the Indian River, where the precise laser instrument even detected the shallow riverbed and the causeway that connects with mainland Florida.

50 years ago, the astronauts rocketed to the moon from launch pad 39A at Cape Canaveral - a marshy spit of land covered in trees, shrubs & ponds. Our height-measuring satellite 🛰️highlights the site in today's .

You've seen what Cape Cod looks like from ... now here's what the satellite looks like from Cape Cod! scientist Jeremy Harbeck caught ICESat-2 🛰orbiting over the East Coast earlier this month in these long-exposure shots 📷

A hot summer day calls for an icy ! Crane Glacier’s steep cliffs, ice, and blowing snow or low fog come into view as 🛰️ passed over the Antarctic Peninsula, taking some of the 100s of millions of height measurements it collects daily

As ICESat-2 took measurements over the terminus of Jakobshavn, it detected the glacier's highly crevassed surface - the moving ice causes cracks to form.

The calving front of Greenland's Jakobshavn Glacier shows its profile in today's , a look at elevations has measured since launch. In Nov., its laser photons reflected off a high pond among rocks, bergy bits in the fjord & the steep edge of the glacier

ICESat-2 passed over two stretches of Cape Cod, along with Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound - the resolution of the height-measuring satellite is so precise it can detect choppier seas 🌊 north of and south of

Heading down the Cape this weekend? 🏖️ passed over Cape Cod (2x!) and Nantucket, capturing the elevation profile of trees 🌳, ponds 🎣, even the shallow water bathymetry for today's l👀k at the varied terrain the satellite is measuring 📏

Three new projections of the Greenland ice sheet ❄️ out to the year 3000 offer a look at how much Greenland could contribute to sea level rise 🌊 — up to 4 inches in the next 50 years, to start.

ICESat-2 is turned on throughout its orbit, taking measurements of the height of the globe 🌎. Sunday, it passed from south to north over a bend in the Grand Canyon, recording a detailed topography of the deep canyon and its tributaries.

Antarctic glaciers ❄️ were just named for a handful of satellites 🛰 -- including and GRACE -- for their contributions to glaciology. The GRACE and Landsat Ice Streams are both on the Antarctic Peninsula 🇦🇶. We're pretty proud of our fleet of eyes in the sky! 🥳

ICESat-2's orbits on Jan. 15 took it over the base of Pine Island Glacier, and across a jumble of icebergs frozen in sea ice - seen here in a MODIS image from EOSDIS Worldview, with the orbits superimposed.

In this data from Jan. 15, rough icebergs as high as 200 feet float in the icy water at the base of Pine Island Glacier, with smaller bergy bits around them. For more about the glacier & icebergs, visit:
