NASA Exoplanets
Engineers confirm 's mission ended today. The spacecraft is in safe mode, as planned. In 16+ years in space, Spitzer changed our understanding of the universe & was a pathfinder for space telescopes to come. It was a very good spacecraft🖤

Hello . Why aren't airplane wheels pre-rotated with wind vanes like these before hitting the pavement at 200+ MPH, releasing chunks of rubber? They would automatically match the speed of the wheels to that of the oncoming wind. I have always wondered about this.

The main reason is it's extra complexity & weight that is not required. (There are *some* aircraft that do it but they are special variants.) Yes bits do come off but it's easier and cheaper to just send out a team to pick those bits up after.

So with all of those wonderful points in its favor, why has it been taken out of service ? What parts no longer work ? Could they be replaced if a service craft were to stop by in the neighbourhood ?

Too far away to be serviced by current spacecraft? With BFR capability, maybe it can be back in service. A service mission to Hubble too?
