1/ I was walking into Grady one day after lunch and saw 3 young black men standing outside near the entrance. They were laughing and talking in animated voices. The easy, melodic African American vernacular they used was familiar. Some profanity was interspersed. I drew closer.

I think effective teachers are not driven by the standards; they’re driven by the needs of their kids. They understand the curriculum and they teach what is required but it’s always in the context of understanding where their students are, and what it takes to move them forward.

We are preparing students to be successful… but we also need to prepare them to fail. Life is not easy. We need to teach students how to overcome adversity.

It always upsets me when people say they “don’t have a creative bone in their body,” or anything along those lines. The more we embrace and celebrate our so-called “small-c” creativity, the more fulfilling, purposeful, and respected our lives will be.
