Yeah, which I totally get since for a lot of people it'll just be like three hours of awful things happing to a child.

Quality wise I'd say it compares to something like Nanjing Nanjing (City of Life and Death):

Yeah, apparently the Venice reception was pretty negative. Marketa Lazarova is just one of its influences though, you also see a lot of Diamonds of the Night, Trial on the Road, Come & See, Ivan's Childhood, The White Ribbon, and Schindler's List.

I counted three walkouts but that may have been because it's a nearly three hour film that played late into the night. The subject matter is very rough, but it's not entirely humourless, and it has a dark fairy tale quality that I liked a lot.

Yeah, it's not quite at that level, but still a very good and worthwhile film I think. I've heard there have been some very negative reactions, but I had a good crowd when I saw it, and people seemed to be into it.

Wish Terrence Malick's A HIDDEN LIFE was in the not least so that I could include (aka and )'s poster in my upcoming NYFF round-up.

For sure, I don't think there's anything wrong with liking the movie, I just find it bizarre that it inspires so much frothing at the mouth.

I think it only went into production 2000/2001, but either way I'd count it based on when it was released.
