During my academic career (so far) I've had to store data on magnetic tape (reel) magnetic tape (casette) 5¼" floppy disk 3½" floppy disk Jazz drive (nice!) Zip disk CD-R CD-RW SD cards (various) USB "pen" drives Clouds too numerous to mention Now where did I leave that backup?

Most comms was via American satellites. Our comms were designed for fighting USSR in the northern hemisphere not on the wrong side of the planet. There weren’t any/many modern maps of the islands anyway. There was plenty of mail sent south tho. and a lot of porn.

Nope. Fax was introduced in 1964. By the 70s US & UK military were using it for select communications. Commercial faxes were common by the early 80s. However there were no comms tgat would do over 1.2k a second & no good digital maps, printers etc.

Fax massively predates 1982. Bandwidth/connectivity availability perhaps the culprit of why they couldn't do so?
