Two X-Men fan letters from 1976, one who thinks Chris Claremont’s new run can only be saved by jettisoning the diverse cast, the other from a woman of color glad to see herself represented in the pages of her favorite comic. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I know I grew up in the late 80s & early 90s, right when the X-Men animated TV show was to take off, but I ALWAYS loved how diverse and unique the X-Men characters were. Storm being one of my favorites, I graspsd & understood the strong messages, it helped shaped who I am today

I notice how his requests regarding foreign members aren't so much 'leave the X-Men', as much as it's 'leave the X-Men and go back where you came from'. Not that he's implying anything, of course.

The white guy that, by '76 standarss, would be considered 'the Commie', and after getting married, he wants them to quit the team and fuck off to Africa. Truly, a visionary.

The irony is, the letter was written at a time when Wolverine was such a tremendous pain in the ass that Claremont and Cockrum were considering getting rid of him. Cockrum especially disliked who Wolverine was at the time.

Not ironic. He picked by far the most boring X-Men b/c macho dude.. that is it.

I think it might be more “Well, the Beast is in the Avengers so who’s most like the Beast? And white?"

I can see that point.. but I still stick by the macho Wolverine idea cause Wolvie is hairy, but that's about all he shares with the bouncing Beast

Plus animalistic powers. Powers are very important to some readers, while personality and motivation are irrelevant.

Different mindset I guess cause I don't really see Beast's powers as being animalistic.. but I guess you could be right there.. they just have very different power sets and Beast is a genius.. Idk. I don't know this person (thankfully). I just assume he wants Wolvie for Wolvie

Outside of the general obvious ones, I'm not sure which opinion I find more appalling: his various ideas about what they should do to the characters he doesn't like or his apperent belief that Dave Cockrum is a bad artist

Dave Cockrum is one of the best designers in superhero history. I have an eternal love of the Disco Legion Of Superheroes.
