It's not clear if Sunday's Ukip NEC will vote no confidence in leader Henry Bolton. Arnott quitting Ukip (& NEC) makes that slightly harder. And an NEC no confidence vote wouldn't automatically force Bolton out. Sacking him requires an EGM attended by at least 250 Ukip members

On C4News tonight we noted how little success the Left/Momentum have had in Parliamentary selections so far. This is the analysis by LabourList

Party members gathering in Macclesfield, a Labour target seat, believe it or not, to pick parliamentary candidate for next election. If 24 candidates picked so far, only 5 are Left/Momentum, according to LabourList analysis See C4News shortly

Distressing & extraordinary news. Police have made 3 arrests relating to possible murder of my great friend Peter Farquhar, who died in 2015. He taught me at Manchester GS, & also taught at Stowe

I’ve wondered that ever since 2000 when I was researching book on Murdoch. The WSJ (before Murdoch bought it) beat me to extraordinary story of how Deng came to US. See WSJ Oct/Dec 2000. It would make a great book/movie

Are you sitting an exam in Whitworth Hall today? In 1921, Albert Einstein delivered his first UK lecture in there!

Times article today on how President Tyler, who was born in 1790, has two grandsons thought to be still alive. Can anyone match such feats of generational longevity?

If Donald Trump is re-elected in 2020 he'll have to come to the UK eventually, as the G8 summit of world leaders is set to take place here in 2021

The last US president never to visit the UK while in office was Gerald Ford, who visited 18 other states during his presidency from 1974-77. Before him Lyndon Johnson (1963-69) didn't visit Britain either.

Update. I hadn't realised the Attorney General gets a Cabinet minister's salary, so the average pay for the 19 men attending Cabinet is roughly £142,608; for the 9 women it is £129,315

By my rough reckoning, the average pay the 19 men MPs who attend Cabinet are entitled to is £140,703. The average pay of the nine women MPs who now attend Cabinet is £129,315. This includes May, but excludes Baroness Evans whose pay is lower because she’s not an MP
