DM was founded on the belief that streaming is an incredibly powerful approach to solving problems, and building out the was the first step to making it tractable for the complex landscape that we saw in the wild.

When we decided to go further and take investment in the company, we spent a long time figuring out what the next piece of the puzzle was. The entire streaming domain has been evolving at lightning speed, and it wasn’t clear what was actually bottlenecking its mass adoption.

After a few product iterations that emphasized stream *processing*, it became evident that there was still work to be done to make the upstream story more complete in the *storage* layer. Without adequately solving the latter, it’s hard to make gains in the former.

It was clear to us that Kafka already dominated streaming storage, and there wasn’t a reason start out with a clean slate. ’s combination of the Kafka abstraction with robust, economically viable storage in the cloud was the perfect mix to move the needle.

The Confluent ecosystem carefully moved from storage, to processing, to connectors, and continues to grow outward by attaching itself to its former pieces. It looks obvious in practice, but so few software ecosystems can do this so fluidly.

So thank you to everyone who’s ever taken an interest in Onyx, Pyrostore, or anything else that we’ve ever done. Your encouragement kept us in the game when it was hard. But now, we keep going on with the mission with Confluent. Thanks everyone!
